Truly an amazing piece of furniture! The color, the craftsmanship, the original hardware, the size!
Certainly one of the finest examples of it's period: probably early to mid 19th century!
Overall dimensions: 89 wide x 29 1/2 deep x 75 tall
The buffet rests on huge bun feet that are in excellent condition. The molding around the base supports a cabinet containing two doors (one on either end), one central drawer of double depth, three drawers along the upper edge,
and an open area in the middle beneath the double drawer. The front of each door is carved with ellipses on panels. The double depth drawer is also panelled. On each end carved acanthus leaves and floral designs rise.
The upper three drawers gracefully curve to the serving area. The upper left drawer is felt lined for holding silver serving pieces and smaller items. Internal measurements of this drawer: front compartment - 15 x 4 1/4; left compartment - 4 x 17; right compartment - 10 x 17. Each section is 4 deep. The right drawer is not compartmentalized. Overall internal measurements: 15 x 20 x 4 (deep). The upper center drawer measures
35 1/2 x 22 x 4 (deep). The lower center drawer measures 35 3/4 x 20 1/2 x 7 1/4 (deep). The open area in the middle beneath the drawers measures 39 x 21 x 14 (high). The front opening measures 32 1/4 wide x 10 1/2 high.
Open the right door and you will find one of the most unique features of this amazing buffet: a zinc (?) -lined
oak-sided sliding wine cooling drawer with dividers for nine large bottles or jugs.
The serving area of the buffet measures 86 wide x 18 deep. The rear is raised 5 1/4 to a 6 1/4 ledge along the entire width of the buffet. Rising from the ledge is a beautifully carved back board with four arched sections.
Each side of the arch is supported by a carved column and surrounded above by detailed carving. Between each section of arches and on each end are carved oblong medallions and surrounded by intertwined edging.
Two massive solid oak columns support the oak canopy. Each column is highly carved acanthus, draping, and geometric figures rising to an egg and dart crown and Ionic capitals. From the base of the column to the base
of the canopy measures 27 1/4. The circumference of the fullest portion of the column is 7 3/4.
The canopy is highly carved around the face with geometric and stylized floral designs. Dentil molding supports
the upper molding which is identical to the molding around the base.
The hardware is all original and in outstanding condition. Each drawer pull is a massive bronze of putti, winged creatures, and scrolling acanthus. Each is mounted on heavily cast bronze plates. Each end drawer and door has a lock and the key is included. Note: two original screws are missing on one drawer pull and the screws have been replaced on the left door hardware.
